If you use any boolean logic in a keyword search in the catalog, the results will default to be sorted by date.

If the options to change it to relevance or title don't show up at the top of the results screen, you can change it to relevance ranking by changing the "D" at the end of the URL to "R." If the end has "DD," change it to "RR."

Example:

https://alcuin.furman.edu/search/X?SEARCH=(%22french%20revolution%22%20and%20(women%20or%20gender))&searchscope=1&SORT=D

should be changed to 

https://alcuin.furman.edu/search/X?SEARCH=(%22french%20revolution%22%20and%20(women%20or%20gender))&searchscope=1&SORT=R
